The TEN STAGES of THE MARSH SYSTEM© of STRATEGIC PLANNING represent a very practical no-nonsense process for unearthing the really important issues / dilemmas (alligators) facing your organization, and devising realistic and innovative strategies and tactics for dealing with them.

Pre planning:

  • Identify specific issues outcome expectations and deliverables. Form planning task force; define information that must be collected to help make sound decisions.

The Process:

  • Define business vision and mission: consensus on why the business exists, if it didn't exist how would customers, clients and people reinvent it, determine the primary business purpose, identify values, create image of what the future and success will look like.
  • Examine the strategic position: Gather up-to-date information on internal and external critical issues.
  • Agree result priorities: Calculating the Gap devising realistic and imaginative strategies for dealing with them. Define options for addressing critical issues and the results needed
  • Identify next actions: who will do what, when and what cost.
  • Roll-out the plan: Communicate the plan across the organization so everyone knows the game plan.


Assign accountability: Monitor the scorecard. Incentivise. Hold monthly or quarterly strategy staff meetings. Evaluate performance and what is happening. Make corrections based on key measurements. Manage activities to drive future results.
